We are delighted to have found a new supplier of genuine panama hats; having been stockists of the Olney Panamas for many years we were left with a large void when Olney sadly ceased trading. So we're excited to launch our first Panama hat range from Failsworth Hats. The range includes seven panama hats, all hand-woven from the finest Toquilla straw in Ecuador.
The Down Brim panama hat from Failsworth is made using natural colour Toquilla palm as opposed to bleached; the end result has a richer colour to it. Failsworth panama hats are hand-woven in Ecuador using traditional skills and techniques. The star/flower shape on the top of the crown is a good way of identifying a hand-woven hat from a machine-made copy. The Down Brim style is similar in specification to the Fedora but it has a slightly wider, flatter brim.
The original Panama hat is lightweight, breathable and incredibly comfortable to wear. Due to the density of the weave, the hat will naturally help protect you from the sun, providing sun protection to UPF 50.
The origins of the Panama hat evolved as a cottage industry along the Ecuadorian coast, they were then sold across Panama, where it was labelled the "Panama hat". The genuine Panama is one of the most iconic hats in history, beginning in the early to mid-1600's. Many notable people in history have donned a Panama hat including Napoleon III, King Edward VII and Winston Churchill.
